Cheating The Ferryman: Life After Death?

Some of my more favorite things to read about involve the intermingling of science with mysticism. Fritjof Capra's The Tao of Physics is probably tops in this category, and a quick look at the television show Lost, and its eternal conflict of "man of faith vs. man of science" gives you a clean picture of the overlap between mystical ideas and scientific paradigms.

Yesterday I was contacted by author Anthony Peake, introducing me to the ideas from his book Is There Life After Death. From Peake's web site:

Can there ever be a rationally satisfying and scientifically based explanation as to what happens to consciousness at the point of death?

I believe that there can be and that this explanation in no way invalidates long held religious beliefs about life after death.

The way in which we "Cheat The Ferryman" as I like to term my theory, lies deep within the structures of the brain itself - an area where thought itself touches upon the very building blocks of reality.

Peake also maintains a blog community called Cheating the Ferryman where you can find information on his ideas and experiments:

According to Greek mythology all recently dead souls have the option of returning to the world of the living. In order to do this they have to drink from the Lethe, one of the five great rivers of The Underworld. The waters of this 'River of Forgetting' wash away all memories of a previous life. The soul is then re-born on earth to live its life again. My book is an attempt to show that the ancient Greek myth has a potential truth within its fiction. By reviewing the physics of reality, the science of perception and the neurology of the brain it suggests that we may not inevitably have to cross into the world of the dead. This is a blog site for all interested in this new, revolutionary theory.
